Should Christians submit to Obama and his agents?
Does Jesus want us to honor and submit ourselves to Obama and his agents? First we should remember that Jesus works and manages EVERYTHING according to the counsel of HIS OWN WILL, even presidential and proposition elections.
***Eph 1:9 He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which HE PURPOSED in Him 10 with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, . . . In Him 11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, . . ."
I believe that the Scriptures given below indicate that it was God's will for Obama and the Democrats to win and every American should be subject, in Christ, to Obama and the law enforcement authorities. For there is no presidential or law enforcement authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the presidential or law enforcement authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For presidents and law enforcers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for presidents and law enforcers are God's servants for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for they do not bear their weapons in vain. For they are the servants of God, avengers who carry out God's wrath on wrongdoers. "Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience."
According to His own purpose and will Jesus works and manages both kings, presidents, senators, representatives and Supreme Court justices, and gives those positions to whomsoever He wishes, according to the following Word.
***Dan 4:17 This word is by decree of the observers;
the matter is a command from the holy ones.
This is so the living will know
that the Most High is ruler
over the kingdom of men.
He gives it to anyone He wants and sets over it the lowliest of men. . . . 25 You [King Nebuchadnezzar] will be driven away from people to live with the wild animals. . . . until you acknowledge that the Most High is ruler over the kingdom of men, and He gives it to anyone He wants. . . . 30 the king exclaimed, "Is this not Babylon the Great that I have built by my vast power to be a royal residence and to display my majestic glory?" 31 While the words were still in the king's mouth, a voice came from heaven: "King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared that the kingdom has departed from you. 32 You will be driven away from people to live with the wild animals, . . . until you acknowledge that the Most High is ruler over the kingdom of men, and He gives it to anyone He wants." . . . 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, exalt, and glorify the King of heaven, because all His works are true and His ways are just. And He is able to humble those who walk in pride." HCSB
***Proverbs 21:1 THE KING'S heart is in the hand of the Lord, as are the watercourses; He turns it whichever way He wills. AB
***Ezra 6:22 For seven days they celebrated with joy the Feast of Unleavened Bread, because the LORD had filled them with joy by changing the attitude of the king of Assyria, so that he assisted them in the work on the house of God, the God of Israel. NIV
***ISA 37: 21 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent [a message] to [king] Hezekiah: "The LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Because you prayed to Me about Sennacherib king of Assyria, 22 this is the word the LORD has spoken against him: . . . 23 Who is it you have mocked and blasphemed?
Who have you raised [your] voice against
and lifted your eyes in pride?
Against the Holy One of Israel!
24 You have mocked the LORD through your servants. . . .
28 But I know your sitting down,
your going out and your coming in,
and your raging against Me.
29 Because your raging against Me
and your arrogance has reached My ears,
I will put My hook in your nose
and My bit in your mouth;
I will make you go back
the way you came."

***Rom 13:1 Every person should be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing." ESV [written when under the authority of the ungodly Caesars of Rome]
***1 Peter 2:13 Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme, . . . Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king NKJV [written when under the authority of the ungodly Caesars of Rome]
Why would Jesus appoint an ungodly ruler over a nation? One reason is "so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him." Rulers are used by God to lead and shake up nations for His purposes. The evil rulers of Israel under Rome persecuted the Christians so badly that they fled to other cities and countries (Mat 10:23), spreading the Gospel everywhere they went (Acts 8:1-4).
***Acts 17:24 This God made the world and everything in it. He is Lord of heaven and earth, and he doesn't live in temples built by human hands. 25He doesn't need help from anyone. He gives life, breath, and everything else to all people. 26From one person God made all nations who live on earth, and he decided when and where every nation would be. 27 God has done all this, so that we will look for him and reach out and find him. He isn't far from any of us, 28and he gives us the power to live, to move, and to be who we are. CEV
I believe there will be persecution of evangelical, fundamental and orthodox Christians under the Obama administration. Already it is politically correct to mock, ridicule and belittle such Christians. This could be what is happening to the untouchable Dalits of Orissa in India today [http://groups.google.com/group/cpindia?hl=en and/or http://christianpersecutionindia.blogspot.com/2008/10/where-is-that-sistercome-let-us-rape.html; http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/305889.aspx; http://www.gfa.org/orissa-update?cm_mmc=GFA-_-Email-_-377991-_-080828; http://www.christianpost.com/article/20080826/hindu-mob-attacks-christian-orphanage.htm]. Please pray for this oppressed Christian minority and boycott all things Indian until the government stops the attacks.
Another reason Jesus might appoint an ungodly ruler over a nation is to prepare it for His wrath and judgment. A nation can by its rebellion against and rejection of Jesus bring death and destruction on itself. Consider the possible reason given in 2 Thes 2:10-12 for so many Americans believing Obama, and the description of politically correct America and its new morality given below in Romans 1.
***2 Th 2:10 and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God sendeth them a working of error, that they should believe a lie: 12 that they all might be judged who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. ASV
***Romans 1:18 For God's [holy] wrath and indignation are revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who in their wickedness repress and hinder the truth and make it inoperative. 19 For that which is known about God is evident to them and made plain in their inner consciousness, because God [Himself] has shown it to them. . . . 21 Because when they knew and recognized Him as God, they did not honor and glorify Him as God or give Him thanks. But instead they became futile and godless in their thinking and their senseless minds were darkened. 22 Professing to be smart, they made simpletons of themselves. . . . 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their [own] hearts to sexual impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, . . . 25 Because they exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, Who is blessed forever! Amen (so be it). 26 For this reason God gave them up to vile and strong sexually excessive desires<3806>; for both their females changed the natural instinctive<5446> sexual intercourse<5540> into that contrary to natural reproduction<5449>; 27 and similarly <3668> the males also, leaving the natural instinctive<5446> sexual intercourse<5540> with the female, were inflamed in their lust [=very strong and sinful sexual desire] towards one another; males with males working out fully <2716> [their] external genitals<808>, and receiving in themselves the recompense of their error which was fit. 28 And so, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God or approve of Him or consider Him worth the knowing, God gave them over to a base and condemned mind to do things not proper or decent but loathsome, 29 Until they were filled with every kind of unrighteousness, iniquity, grasping and covetous greed, and malice. [They were] full of envy and jealousy, murder, strife, deceit and treachery, ill will and cruel ways. [They were] secret backbiters and gossipers, 30 Slanderers, hateful to and hating God, full of insolence, arrogance, [and] boasting; inventors of new forms of evil, disobedient and undutiful to parents. 31 [They were] without understanding, conscienceless and faithless, heartless and loveless [and] merciless. 32 Though they are fully aware of God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do them themselves but approve and applaud others who practice them. [Derived from Amplified Bible and <Strong's Lexicon/Dictionary>]
***Ezek 14:"12 The word of the LORD came again to me, saying: 13 "Son of man, WHEN A LAND SINS AGAINST ME BY PERSISTENTLY AND TREACHEROUSLY DISOBEYING [MY LAW], I will stretch out My hand against it; I will cut off its supply of bread, send FAMINE on it, and cut off man and beast from it. . . . . 15 "If I cause WILD BEASTS to pass through the land, and they empty it, and make it so desolate that no man may pass through because of the beasts, . . . 17 "Or if I bring a sword on that land, and say, 'SWORD [of warfare], go through the land,' and I cut off man and beast from it, . . . 19 "Or if I send a PESTILENCE into that land and pour out My fury on it in blood, and cut off from it man and beast, 20 even though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live," says the Lord GOD, "they would deliver neither son nor daughter; they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness." 21 For thus says the Lord GOD: "How much more it shall be when I send My four severe judgments on Jerusalem—the sword and famine and wild beasts and pestilence—to cut off man and beast from it? " NKJV + Strong's Hebrew Dictionary
***Ezek 5:7. . . . "I am the LORD God! You have refused to obey my laws and teachings, and instead you have obeyed the laws of the surrounding nations. You have become more rebellious than any of them! 8. Now all those nations will watch as I turn against you and punish you 9. for your sins. Your punishment will be more horrible than anything I've ever done or will ever do again.. . . 16. I will destroy your crops until you starve to death, and disasters will strike you like arrows. 17. Starvation and wild animals will kill your children. I'll punish you with horrible diseases, and your enemies will strike you down with their swords. I, the LORD, have spoken." CEV
So what is our responsibility under Christ when we find ourselves under an ungodly and anti-Jesus ruler, in an ungodly and anti-Jesus nation?
***1 Tim 2:1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. ESV
******Rom 13:1 Every person should be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. [ through v. 6, see above]
Even under wicked and ungodly rulers, we are called to Live His Way, loosening the bands of wickedness that bind people, undoing the heavy burdens of sin/grief/loss/pain/suffering that people are bearing, letting the oppressed ones go free from that which has enslaved and addicted them, breaking every yoke by which people are kept in subjection to sin and evil, feeding the hungry, finding housing for the wandering poor, clothing those inadequately clothed, caring for your own relatives, working at removing the oppressive and enslaving yoke that is on those around you, ceasing from accusing and/or slandering others, and caring for and comforting those who are afflicted and suffering, and being careful not to waste your life in foolish, empty and worthless talk. See Isa 58 and Mat 25:35-45. We can only achieve this by calling on Jesus to save us from our weakness and inadequacy (John 15:1-5; Rom 10:13), by presenting and yielding ourselves to Jesus to be instruments of His righteousness (Rom 6 & 12), and trusting Him to work and will in us His Work and His Will (Phil 2:13; 4:13; Gal 2:20; Heb 13:20,21)
Even under wicked and ungodly rulers we are called to Live His Way and live committed to actively love others, even our enemies (Luke 6:27-36), by being patient, kind, envy-free, jealousy-free, advancing their good interests, assertive for their good needs, seeking their good benefit, boastful of any good about them, humbly recognizing and accepting their limitations; behaving well, angry at evil but patient with weakness, forgiving wrongs done, delivering people from evil and harm, rejoicing in truth and merciful justice together, standing up and speaking out together for merciful justice and truth.
***Eph 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them. . . . 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather [gently, meekly and humbly] expose them.
***2Tim 2:24 And a bondman of [the] Lord ought not to contend, but be gentle towards all; apt to teach; forbearing; 25 in meekness setting right those who oppose, if God perhaps may sometime give them repentance to acknowledgment of [the] truth, 26 and that they may awake up out of the snare of the devil, [who are] taken by him, for *his* will. Darby
We are called to obey King Jesus and His Word, even if it means disobeying our parents and/or the law of the land.
***Ezek 20:18 I said to their children in the desert, "Do not follow the statutes of your fathers or keep their laws or defile yourselves with their idols. 19 I am the LORD your God; follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. NIV
Remember how Daniel had to disobey the King to pray (Daniel 6); how Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego had to disobey the King's order to worship his idol (Daniel 3), and how the Apostles had to disobey the religious rulers of Israel to preach the Gospel (Acts 5:28-30). No matter what the rulers may say or what the law may be,
we are called to obey the Will of the Master, King Jesus - - - -
***"18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Matt 28 HCSB
***Heb 13:20 Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. For God, the Father in Heaven who is a consuming fire, so unselfishly and compassionately loved humans that He sent His only Son who was miraculously born of Mary to meet the requirements of justice and die in our place to take on Himself the judgment we deserve for our sins, so that if we believe Him and rely on Him to make us right with Father and save us from all that makes us incompatible with Father, He makes us compatible with Father so we can live with Him forever in His Love, liberating Truth, enlightening Light and everlasting Life.
